Discover the joys of prague with our guide to the Jewish Quarter
Josefov, the Jewish Quarter of Prague lies between the Old Town Square and the Vltava River. It was one of the most important commercial centres of Prague from the thirteenth century through to the Second World War, and contains many sites of historic interest.
Amongst the highlights of the Jewish Quarter, you should make time to visit the Jewish Cemetery, the Jewish Town Hall, Old-New Synagogue, which dates from the 13th century, and is the best preserved building of its kind in Europe. The Jewish Museum comprises the five most important sites in Josefov, and includes the cemetery, town hall and synagogue above, as well as the Maisel Synagogue and Spanish Synagogue.
All in all, the Jewish Museum has one of the best collections of Judaic art in the whole world, and at the Ceremonial Hall, you can see an impressive display of costumes and discover more about the traditions of the Prague Jewish Community over more than 700 years.
All in all, including the many back streets and historic buildings, it is possible to spend a day or more exploring Josefov, but if you want to take in the highlights, booking a place on one of the many walking tours is a great way to see the area in the hands of a guide.
