Enjoy Prague more with our guide to the Charles Bridge
Providing the main pedestrian link between the Old Town of Prague and the lesser town of Mala Strana, Charles Bridge has become one of the most iconic and recognisable sights in the city of Prague.
The bridge was fist opened in the 13th century, and is recognised today as one of the most important historic structures in the city. It was designed by the favourite architect of King Charles IV - Peter Parler, and envisaged as a simple connection between the two halves of the city. It is a popular place for a romantic stroll and is frequently packed with couples walking together.
The bridge is most notable for the 30 statues that line its parapets, and are of famous figures from the history of Prague through the ages. Most of the statues on display today are replicas due to the originals being swept away or damaged by floods - although the oldest, and arguably most interesting is that of John of Nepomuk.
If you want to avoid the worst of the crowds, the best time to walk across Charles Bridge in Prague is in the early morning, while the best views of the city are in the evening, when many of the most beautiful buildings in Prague are floodlit and create a stunning skyline.
